LA Teen Takes on School District & USDA to Revolutionize Milk Choices!
August 21, 2023 12:29 pm
Teen Activist Marielle Williamson Champions Nondairy Milk Rights in Landmark Lawsuit Against School District and USDA
In a remarkable display of courage and determination, Marielle Williamson, a passionate and driven teenager from Los Angeles, has taken a bold step in the fight for a more inclusive and compassionate school environment. By filing a groundbreaking lawsuit against her school district and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Marielle is advocating for the promotion of nondairy milk options in schools. Her unwavering dedication to the cause demonstrates the power of youth activism in shaping a more sustainable and compassionate future.
The Importance of Nondairy Milk:
Nondairy milk has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its numerous health benefits, its positive environmental impact, and its alignment with ethical choices. Plant-based alternatives such as almond, soy, and oat milk offer a rich source of essential nutrients while being free from lactose and cholesterol. By promoting nondairy milk options in schools, we can provide students with healthier and more inclusive choices, accommodating various dietary preferences and ensuring that no student is left behind.
Promoting Healthier Choices:
Marielle's lawsuit highlights the crucial need to prioritize the health and well-being of students. By offering nondairy milk options, schools can contribute to reducing the consumption of animal products, which have been linked to various health issues, including heart disease, obesity, and lactose intolerance. Nondairy milk provides a nutritious and delicious alternative, rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein, supporting the overall well-being of students and empowering them to make informed dietary choices.
Environmental Sustainability:
Beyond personal health, Marielle's advocacy for nondairy milk recognizes the urgent need to address the environmental impact of animal agriculture. Animal farming is a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution. By embracing nondairy milk options, schools can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to the preservation of our planet. Encouraging sustainable choices at an early age instills values of environmental stewardship in future generations, helping build a more sustainable and compassionate world.
A Call for Inclusivity and Compassion:
Marielle Williamson's lawsuit serves as a powerful reminder that inclusivity and compassion should be at the forefront of educational institutions. By offering nondairy milk options, schools can create a more inclusive environment that respects the diverse dietary needs and ethical beliefs of students. This initiative promotes a culture of empathy and understanding, fostering a sense of community where every student feels valued and supported.
Supporting Marielle's Mission:
Marielle's courageous fight for nondairy milk rights requires our support. We can join her in advocating for change by raising awareness about the numerous benefits of nondairy milk options and by urging our local school districts and the USDA to prioritize inclusivity and sustainability. By sharing Marielle's story on social media, reaching out to policymakers, and engaging in conversations about the importance of nondairy milk, we can help create a ripple effect of change that resonates with schools nationwide.
Marielle Williamson's lawsuit against her school district and the USDA is a powerful testament to the impact one individual can have on shaping a more compassionate and sustainable world. By promoting nondairy milk options in schools, we not only prioritize the health and well-being of students but also contribute to the protection of our environment. Let us stand in solidarity with Marielle and support her mission for a more inclusive, healthier, and compassionate future for all. Together, we can make a difference.

Plant-Based Dieticians Reveal Secret to Lasting Marriage... Marriage to Health!
May 24, 2023 7:48 pm
Get “Married to Health” with Plant-Based Dieticians James and Dahlia Marin
Did you know that many plant-based dieticians feel disillusioned about what they learned in school? According to RDs James and Dahlia Marin, their dietician training perpetuated industry-funded advice. It offered misguided information about simply needing to count carbs and fats without regard for their source.
Yet this experience inspired them to create a thriving integrative dietetics practice called Married to Health, which is founded on evidence-based principles of lifestyle medicine and plant-based nutrition. As college sweethearts who attended the same nutrition and dietetics program, they fell in love with health and with each other simultaneously.
[00:00-30] Intro
[00:30-5:44] - Personal health issues sparked an interest in plant-based nutrition
Both were brought into nutrition through their own personal health journeys. For Dahlia, her turning point was the day that she was diagnosed with multiple syndromes and conditions at once. Despite no nutritional advice from medical professionals, she started learning on her own.
After watching documentaries and reading books, they both became motivated to help others prevent and reverse avoidable lifestyle diseases. They went on to found their own practice, Married to Health, which is the first 100% plant-based IBS/SIBO nutrition program.
[5:45 -10:44] - Becoming aware of industry funding and misguided nutrition advice in school
The Marins felt they were the only ones who noticed in graduate school that research, guest speakers, conferences and textbooks were funded by industry interests. They became concerned with lack of transparency in the food industry.
Another flaw in their training was the exclusive focus on quantitative over qualitative measures. Professors taught them that diabetics needed to simply count the number of carbs they consumed, equating carbs from a sweet potato to carbs from refined flour. The Marins were one of the few to question this concept, among others.
[10:45-16:11] - Both people seeking treatment and prevention can benefit from Married to Health’s services
Their team is made up of dieticians with different specialties. While some dieticians work with those who have already been diagnosed with a condition, others specialize in prevention. Their practice accepts insurance in an effort to make services more accessible to more people.
[16:12-21:39] - Plant-based diets have the power to prevent and treat disease. Claims to the contrary are unfounded and likely trying to sell you something.
Much high-quality evidence exists indicating the power of plant nutrients to treat and prevent autoimmune disease, and geographic rates of disease support this as well. However, the Marins have heard many a “doctor-dietician” make outlandish claims to the contrary. Yet clear research and geographical evidence indicate that those who eat the most plants have lower incidence of chronic and auto-immune disease.
[21:40] - Why hospitals are still feeding patients disease-promoting animal products
According to Dahlia, the hospital cafeteria is typically the number one revenue generator for the hospital. So, cafeterias buy in bulk from large manufacturers to keep costs down.
[23:00] - Change our choices to change the food system
James commented that the first step to changing our food system is to start with our “inner ecosystem.” If we feed our gut microbiomes with ethical, sustainable foods, we’re simultaneously voting with our dollar for food system transformation.
The Marins pointed out that the public school food system is one of the first places that government-subsidized foods like cheese are sent when there is a surplus. Parents who are concerned with school lunch quality can combat the system by avoiding supporting it, as schools are paid for each child they feed.
[27:20-31:17]- 4 Actionable Tips to Go Plant-Based
So, what do these integrative dieticians advise for people interested in adopting a plant-based lifestyle? Here are their four tips:
ADD. Instead of subtracting, focus on trying to add healthy foods like greens, veggies, nuts, seeds and beans.
UPGRADE. Dahlia advises slowly but surely making nutritional swaps, such as a whole grain bread over a white bread.
SUPPORT. Consider who you can support with your food dollars, such as your local farmer’s market.
GO AT YOUR OWN PACE. Sometimes when people make changes very quickly, they feel bloated, don’t eat a balanced plant-based diet, or forget to supplement. “Go slow until you can go full speed,” Dahlia advises.

Unbelievable! She Started a Vegan Revolution - Get the Full Story Now!
April 3, 2023 8:27 pm
Most people don’t know this: veganism is an intersectional social justice movement. But animal and human rights activist Gwenna Hunter is on a mission to let people know!
Gwenna is both a Black woman used to challenging systems of oppression and someone with personal experience with food insecurity. Combined with spiritual experiences connecting to animals, she was inspired to create the first plant-based food bank in Los Angeles, Vegans of LA.
VKind spokesperson Shabnam Islam interviewed her to learn more. Let’s dive in!
1:00 - Gwenna’s background
Although she didn’t realize it until she moved away at twenty years old, Hunter grew up in a food desert in Cleveland, Ohio. She most often ate from the convenience store and Pop Eye’s Chicken.
3:28 - Vegetarian to feel better
In 2008, a friend invited her to try a vegan fast together. To her surprise, Gwenna found that the extremely painful menstrual cycles and concurrent breakouts she suffered from disappeared. Motivated to keep feeling better, she remained a vegetarian for eight years.
4:45 - Connecting with Compassion
In a dream eight years later, she felt connected with a cow as though she was her. She knew that cows experience love and felt incredulous about what we do to these creatures.
7:00 - “Everybody is a crazy vegan when they start”
While many new vegans want to share slaughterhouse footage on social media, this isn’t always the best way to share the message. As Gwenna has learned, the most reliable route to inspire transformation is advocacy with love, compassion and kindness.
9:10 - Personal experience with food insecurity
When Gwenna first moved to LA, she had difficulty getting a job and found herself living in poverty. One week, she only had five dollars to feed herself.
11:35 - Gaining professional experience with vegan food justice
Eventually, she acquired a job with Vegan Outreach and got involved with a vegan mobile food bank that collaborated with social justice organizations.
She realized how important food banks are to remove stress and obstacles for people who face food insecurity. And, she noticed how ironic it was that LA - one of the biggest vegan cities in the U.S. - lacked a vegan food bank.
16:00 - When the pieces came together
One day, a friend told her that a black pastor from BLM was doing a program with students about vegan food. When she met up with him for lunch, she shared her idea. As luck would have it, he already had a food bank. “Instead of starting from scratch,” he said, “Why don’t you take over mine?”
21:20 - How she defines “success” today
Gwenna now judges success by how she feels about herself and whether she is working towards peace and against the roles of power and hierarchy that keep both human and animal injustices alive.
23:30 - How intersectionality of social justice causes is at the forefront of her work
At the heart of her work with the food bank is the core conviction that food is a human right. Like other basic needs, she says, people shouldn’t have to work to have food, shelter and clothing. By sharing the vegan message as part of a broader social justice message, she is able to invite people into the movement.
25:40 - Communication strategies for advocacy: Connect animal rights to human rights
In her work, she has honed the ability to tailor her message to her audience. In particular, she has learned to explain animal rights by relating it to human rights. This is especially important to connect with people who feel like they are fighting for their own rights.
She asks people if they have ever experienced suffering and invites them to consider what humans do to animals with fresh eyes.
She points out that we use words like “bacon” to distance ourselves. But, really what we’re eating are babies, mothers, fathers, and siblings.
Given that Black and brown communities are already questioning the status quo with regard to human rights, she tells them, “Don’t stop there! Think about the whole system of food and animals.”
30:00 - Human rights and animal rights
In her own journey to veganism, she recognized that what cows experience is rape, slavery, depression, and their bodies being sold and used. She realized that the blueprint of human slavery and animal slavery is one and the same.
30:24 - Ask yourself, “What’s really in meat?”
Gwenna points out to people that there’s no list of ingredients on meat. It doesn’t reveal all the antibiotics and drugs that are in there. And, she’ll say, if you watch a video of how hot dogs are made, you might question that as well.
32:38 - Gwenna’s Recommendations
For those who aren’t sure about trying a plant-based diet, Gwenna recommends trying just one meal without animals.
With Gwenna’s personal and professional experience, insights and history of successful work, it’s no wonder people see her as a true changemaker.
